Hi,

I have 2 Lynx AES16e cards and 2 Aurora 16's, for a total of 32 I/O.

Yesterday I updated my Mac OS to OSX 10.11.2

Then I updated my (2) AES16e cards' firmware to the latest version, and installed the latest drivers. (I did this in the correct order specified on the Lynx downloads page). (My 2x Auroras' firmware were already up to date)

Then I installed the latest version of ProTools, 12.4

All went well.

Working in ProTools today I've found a problem.

I wasn't getting any outputs or inputs from my second AES16e card & Aurora 16. (The first one worked fine). In ProTools Setup I/O the Bus screen said that my outputs 17-32 were unavailable due to no DigiLink.

I also looked at the Playback Engine settings: For some reason the playback engine had changed itself to just AES16e #1. So naturally I changed the playback engine to ProTools Aggregate (which is set up as the 2x AES16e cards).
When ProTools restarted, it made all paths inactive – so no Ins or Outs at all!

I tried various shutdowns and reboots (all the obvious things) and checked my cables and connections. I even reversed the cables to eliminate them and the Auroras. Made no difference though.

In my MAC's Audio & Midi set-up, under the ProTools Aggregate Device, the first AES16e card is not lit up, as though it's not responding or available. The second one (and the Mac's own ins and outs) light up as they should.

So the problem seems to be with the first AES16e card communicating with the mac properly?

Even though, initially, when I came across the problem it was the second card not working in ProTools...

Here are my Lynx and Computer specs:

Is each card selectable individually (not in the Aggregate)?

Instead of the Pro Tools Aggregate, does it help if you create your own Aggregate and select that as the Playback Engine?

Hi Mike,

Yes, in the mac's audio midi setup, each card can be selected individually, as well as in the aggregate.

I've also tried creating my own aggregate and that didn't make any difference, I'm afraid.

Thanks,

Nick

Nick,

You might try trashing your ProTools preferences and trying again. You should use the aggregate that you created. Make sure that drift is disabled for both devices in the aggregate.

Here are steps for trashing preferences:

Do both cards work OK with itunes?

Hi Paul,

I did as you suggested - trashed PT preferences. Set up a new aggregate device.
In Pro Tools the new aggregate was selected as playback engine. Re-did my I/O setup, and thankfully, that seemed to fix the problem - ProTools could 'see' and use all 32 I/O.

But the aggregate device in Audio Midi Setup still shows one of the AES16e cards 'greyed out' (not lit up like the other one).

'Whatever, as long as it works' I thought....

But I now find the 2 cards aren't sync-ing.

I boot up the computer, (Auroras off) and Lynx mixer opens. Card 1 is set to 44.1 and card 2 is "sync-ing" to it at 48k!!
I change card 1 to 48k, thinking card 2 will now re-sync, but it doesn't.

I change card 1 to 96k and card 2 then syncs to that. So *seemingly* ok.....

But in Pro Tools, I was playing back a dozen or so channels using the 1st Aurora, and recording my mix back into PT using inputs from the 2nd Aurora.
When I listen back to the mix I just recorded in..... it's full of noise and garbage!

So clearly the 2 cards are not sync-ing.

I've tried re-boots - all the usual things.

What should I do now?

(I have clients booked at the studio for 3 days on 3-5 Jan...... so need to fix this ASAP)

PS: I forgot to check both cards with iTunes.... will do that shortly and report back.

But I did play back audio (from a Youtube video) using card & aurora #2...

And in my previous post the song I was working on was playing back out of card & Aurora #1 ok....

So they each seem to work ok by themselves. It's when I'm using them together there's a problem.

Ok, I've just tested iTunes with both Lynx cards / aurora boxes - Both work fine.

So to recap:

The 2 Auroras work fine by themselves, outputting audio.

The problem is when I'm outputting audio through Aes16e & Aurora #1 and recording thru card/aurora #2.
Constant horrible crackling.

Please help! My studio has ground to a halt. It may be New Year's but I've got work piling up and clients due in just over 24hrs, and my Lynx hardware is not working.

Please Lynx, help me fix the problem!

Hello?

My Clients are coming in 13 hours time and my Lynx hardware is not working properly.

If I have to cancel the 3 day booking, I stand to lose thousands of dollars.

I only did the updating because this website said Lynx hardware would work with El Capitan!

Please help!!

Let's try several things here to get you back on solid footing. First, can you verify what the clock source is for card #2 in the Lynx Mixer? See what the "Current Clock Source shows at the top of the Adapter section. It should be "header"

Let's have you revert your firmware back top the previous version in case that has a bearing on the input distortion. Here is the appropriate updater, you will need to run it on both cards while the Lynx Mixer and all audio apps are closed. Shut down the computer when its complete.

After turning the computer back on, make sure that in the Lynx Mixer card #1 = Internal, and card #2  = Header.  Header requires the ICC clock cable to connect card #1 to card #2. If you do not have that let me know and we will need to come up with an alternate clocking scheme.

Do you still have an install of PT 12.3 to try? If none of the other steps help, that might be worth trying.

Keep me posted!
