Topic: Hilo V8 questions Posted: January/21/2017 at 9:37am |
Hi,
I updated my TB Hilo to the latest FW & Update as well as the remote app for Mac.
I have the following questions :
a) I saved a "user scene" but now it is greyed out and I cannot recall it, is there a solution to that ? b) When I toggle between factory scenes, the TB sign on the top right of the remote app is crossed out. The sound is there but unless I relaunch the app, it won't communicate with the Hilo. Other times it does not show the TB sign at all (you can check the photo in the link). Sometimes it won't communicate unless I power up the Hilo again. c) Finally, although I connect the Hilo to a Kemper profiler via SPDIF, after I've selected "SPDIF coax" as my "Digi. In source" and "Digital in" as my sync source, the app shows what you see in the photo below (ADAT IN).
I'd be grateful if you could help me with these questions/issues as I did not have them before.
Many thanks Than

Also, this occurred as soon as I quit PT 12.7 :

I tried Firmware V8 after seeing a Sound on Sound video which gave the impression that the new firmware was released. (I would like to control volume across different channel sets.)
Even though the beta of V8 was released in Oct '16, there is still, as of Jan '17, no sign of a user manual. The user interface is completely different, and I could not find how to access (or even recreate) my five carefully set up scenes. This immaturity led me to revert to version 7 straight away.

JohnWalker, did you have a specific question? If you look at the very top of this page you will see the links to the final version of the firmware. It was released a couple of weeks ago. We are still working on the manual. I don't have an ETA on that yet but I'll check on that and get back to you.

Hi David,
Just wanted to point out that I've asked some questions in the top post.
Many thanks OG.

David, the implied question was "when will the user get the documentation that shows how the new UI works" I'd appreciate a firm date for the documentation once you can give one - I could not figure out how to set my Hilo up in V8.
My (home audio) use case is an active, digitally filtered, 4-channel speaker set up. USB channels 1-2 are routed through the Hilo 'Monitor out' outputs, while 3-4 are routed through 'AES out' to a slave DAC. (USB 5-6 carries a full-band signal that is routed from 'Line out' to a headphone amp and tape recorder). Consequently, I'd like to have a single volume control that changes level on 'Monitor out' and 'AES out' outputs. I'm sure that the new firmware does this, but having looked at the new UI, I could not work out how to set up the routings and create the scenes.
I also could not find any of my 5 existing 'scenes' on V8, but was relieved to find that they reappeared when I reverted to V7.

Hi I'd like to ask if you will do an update to the hilo remote app too? on ipad will help to have bigger fade with more resolution and buttons bigger for example i think is good idea to invest in refine the remote control fur such an amazing unit maybe more than add functionality just make the one in place more user friendly thanks

It seems kind of crazy to release an official firmware version without a manual! Or maybe I'm crazy for not making sure there was a manual before I installed v8? The world may never know.
It also took me a SUPER long time to get back to what I think was my previous configuration under v7 but today I'll put it through it's paces and find out for sure.
I have questions and as much as I love email and hate talking on the phone, I think my questions would warrant a phone or Skype chat with somebody at Lynx. I am using HILO as a standalone converter and when starting with that preset, I had some routing issues that didn't make sense.
I know that v8 is more advanced and looks a little better, but I certainly didn't find it intuitive enough to really understand without a manual.
I'm guessing Lynx doesn't offer any phone support like this?

I'm now managing to navigate around and reconstruct my scenes in V8, but would still appreciate some documentation on how the 'Monitor' volume control is supposed to work - there's risk of blown speakers if I get that wrong.
I disagree with Jperkinski that V8 looks better. I think its look is messy. An overview of how the menus fit together would be more valuable than pages of individual instructions. Didn't the design team produce a top-down diagram of the menu hierarchy? Could that be made available?
The 'Scenes' page could be all I need for day-to-day use. Even better if one could remove the factory supplied scenes which I don't need, or am I stuck with them?

"I'm guessing Lynx doesn't offer any phone support like this?"
Jperkinski, the assumption is not correct. Of course we offer phone support for Lynx questions of any kind.
The manual is being worked on and will be ready soon. We apologize that we are a bit behind the curve with it. Between NAMM and readying our new Aurora (n) converter, we got a little backlogged.

Hi, John, Regarding the Monitoring.... The MONITORING function is an overall level control of all outputs. When selecting it, a MASTER level control is activated. To prevent level jumps when switching out of MONITORING and back to ROUTING mode, the Master controls remains. If you like, you can then take the Master control off the rotary knob in SETTINGS/SYSTEM/ROTARY CONTROL SETTINGS.

Thanks Mike. I may try calling next week after I've had a few days to get familiar with firmware V8. The standalone setup I'm trying to do seems pretty simple:
The AES coming in from the AES16e goes to the HILO line outs to feed analog mastering gear the lines in go to the HILO AES output to go back to the AES16e and into my DAW.
There were times where I getting additional signal flow and it's not exactly clear what all the routing is doing, and the red/green state of buttons and the little icons on them.

No, I can't figure out your thinking! If I switch to 'monitor' from 'routing', the Hilo turns off the AES output that I've just carefully set up. Doesn't 'routing' set up some connections that I can then 'monitor'???? Thanks for trying to be helpful, Mike N, but your words don't meet my need - I'm no closer to visualising the 'use case' that you are trying to describe. Can't you produce a comprehensible. cogent, comprehensive explanation of how the software is supposed to work that I can study? Please?
(What I was hoping for: a way to gang together the levels of Mon out and AES out so I can control the volume of playback with a single control.)

Yes, that is very straight-ahead. Make sure the LINE OUT is ONLY being fed by the DIGITAL IN (no other source on the left side is Green). Also make sure that the AES OUT is ONLY being fed by the LINE IN (again, no other source on the left side is Green). We are here for you when you are ready....

The only way to gang outputs together currently is to use the MASTER level control which will gang ALL outputs.... The ways to activate the MASTER level are: 1. Click on the MONITORING button at the bottom (This is not "monitoring" as in "I want to monitor my signal." This is the Monitor Controller function....think AVOCET, for example). When MONITORING is selected, the MASTER level control automatically engages. 2. If you wish to stay in ROUTING mode but still have a MASTER level control, go to SETTINGS/SYSTEM/ROTARY CONTROL SETTINGS and click on "Master out" so it gets a box around it. Hit the Back arrow a couple of times to return to the previous screen (Meters perhaps). Now, clicking the rotary encoder will bring up MASTER as one of the controls. Leaving the rotary control set to Master is how you will change the Monitor Out and AES Out together... Hope that helps....

Mike, thanks again. I'm that awkward client who doesn't share an assumed common background. I don't even know what you mean by "think AVOCET". I had to look that up. I'll persevere, though.

Not awkward at all, John. I made an assumption I should not have....You know what they say about assuming.....

Mike I've given up using the 'Master' volume control - it worked OK, but limited the maximum volume quite seriously. How can I squeeze another 20 dB or so of output from it?
