Will a converter add latency? Am I better off connecting the new thunderbolt aurora to a thunderbolt pci-e card rather than a converter to the USB - type C port on the computer?
THANKS, AB

I have not heard reports of any increased latency.
Also, a PCI-e Thunderbolt card would have to be specific to the motherboard, which must already support Thunderbolt...For example, ASUS makes a card for their own specific mobo. |

Yay. I have a gygabyte board with a USB-C connector. So I assume I just have to put in the thunderbolt driver for it - hook up the converter cable from type 2 to type 3 and of course hook up the type 2 cable to the Lynx Aurora!

Please let us know the exact model of the Gigabyte motherboard you are using. If it is just a USB-C connector, then it may not actually be Thunderbolt 3. They are NOT the same (which is very confusing for everyone involved). All Thunderbolt 3 connectors also support USB-C, but very few USB-C connectors also support Thunderbolt 3.

This is the board - it has a thunderbolt chip in it (if that is what it is called):
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z170X-Gaming-7-rev-10#ov And I assume that once I download the thunderbolt 3 driver - that I use the USB-C port for it because I cannot figure out any other port on it that makes sense.

Alan,
It is certainly not clear from the Gigabyte web site if that specific motherboard has Thunderbolt 3. Maybe someone on this forum has better information, but from what I can tell it is USB-C (USB 3.0 and USB 3.1) only. When I search for motherboards on newegg.com that have Thunderbolt, that motherboard does not come up. If it were me, if I had not already purchased the motherboard, I would either make sure I could return it within 30 days for a full refund or I would get the Gigabyte Z270 Gaming 7 which DOES have Thunderbolt 3. Maybe this helps? From the utility page of the motherboard website at https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z170X-Gaming-7-rev-10#support-dl
Is there room for optimism here?

Finally found a page that is more helpful on the Gigabyte website:
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z170X-Gaming-7-rev-11#ov That one says the motherboard is Thunderbolt 3 certified, so that must be a true Thunderbolt 3 port. The manual certainlly could be clearer. I downloaded the manual for that motherboard. The word "Thunderbolt" appears exactly once and it says the USB-C port supports USB 3.1. Do you have the motherboard already? Edited by David A Hoatson - July/17/2017 at 11:51am |

Yes - I already have the motherboard. The download section claims it has a driver for the thunderbolt and there is a diagram showing a thunderbolt chip in the motherboard with the language - "Intel (r) Thunderbolt 3 controller. So I hope that is on the optimistic side. (It was also on the box as being thunderbolt capable.)
Best, AB Intel® Thunderbolt™ 3 Controller |
