I am connecting the Aurora to a device that only supports 192kHz operation in dual-wire mode. How do I set this up?

The Aurora can operate with Dual-Wire Inputs, Dual-Wire Outputs or both. To select the Digital Mode, from the Aurora front panel select Digital for the METER Select parameter. Than click the Digital Mode button until the Digital Mode LEDs confirm the desired configuration. Choices are:

  • Both LEDs OFF: Single Wire I/O Mode. Allows all channels of digital input or output to operate at sample rates up to 192kHz.
  • DUAL WIRE IN ON: Dual Wire Input Mode. Allows compatibility with legacy dual wire input devices. In this mode, the number of available input channels is reduced by ½ (Aurora 16 = 8, Aurora 8 = 4).
  • DUAL WIRE OUT ON: Dual Wire Output Mode. Allows compatibility with legacy dual wire output devices. In this mode, the number of available output channels is reduced by ½ (Aurora 16 = 8, Aurora 8 = 4).
  • Both LEDs ON: Dual Wire I/O Mode. Enables dual wire mode for both inputs and outputs, allowing 8 channels maximum of digital I/O for the Aurora 16, and 4 channels for the Aurora 8.

Additionally, if the Aurora is slaving to an external clock source via wordclock, Ext/2 should be selected as the clock source when operating in dual-wire mode. In this mode, the word clock signal received will be reduced by half (i.e. a received rate of 96kHz will run at 48kHz).

It is important to consider the channel routing consequences of operating in dual-wire mode. Since channel count is reduced by 1/2, signals from AES I/O Port A will appear as Digital channels 1-4, and signals from AES I/O Port B will appear as Digital channels 5-8. This can be confusing when operating with mixed dual and single wire operation, and care should be taken to insure proper routing.
